    About this Barcelona trip

Barcelona sits between the Collserola hills and the Mediterranean, and you feel both within an hour of landing. The light is sharp, the pavement smells faintly of orange peel and tobacco, and the city's grid (Cerdà's nineteenth-century Eixample) makes it walkable in a way most European capitals aren't. Five days is the right length: enough to see the Gaudí landmarks, eat your way through three or four neighborhoods, and still take a slow Sunday in the Gothic Quarter without rushing.

Spend the first two days in the center. Start early at Sagrada Família, then drift down Passeig de Gràcia toward El Born for lunch at Bar del Pla or a long sit at Cal Pep's counter. The Picasso Museum and the Santa Maria del Mar basilica are five minutes apart. Reserve an evening for Palau de la Música Catalana, whose mosaic ceiling alone justifies the ticket. Day three belongs to Gràcia: smaller plazas, vermouth at Bodega Marín, and the climb up to Park Güell and the Bunkers del Carmel for sunset.

Save a day for the water. La Barceloneta still grills sardines on beachfront spits at Can Solé and El Vaso de Oro, and the Ciutadella park nearby is good for an afternoon off your feet. Day five, push into El Raval for MACBA, natural wine at Bar Salvatge, and dinner at Suculent before a late night around Plaça Reial.

Mid-range hotels in Eixample or El Born run 180 to 280 euros. Dinner starts at 9:30, clubs after 1. Avoid August (locals leave, heat is punishing); May, June, and late September are ideal. The metro is fast, but most of what you'll want is walkable.
