    About this Dubai trip

Dubai is a city that built itself on superlatives, but four days here works best when you stop counting tallest-this and biggest-that and start paying attention to texture: the cool marble of a hotel lobby after 40-degree heat, the smell of oud drifting from a souk stall, the call to prayer threading through traffic on Sheikh Zayed Road. A balanced luxury itinerary lets you alternate poolside mornings with late afternoons in the older quarters, when the light goes amber and Instagram suddenly makes sense.

Base yourself in Downtown or on Palm Jumeirah for the first two nights. Mornings are for the beach or the spa at Bulgari Resort or One&Only The Palm. Late afternoon, head to Al Fahidi, where wind-tower houses shade galleries and the Arabian Tea House serves saffron lemonade in a courtyard. Cross the Creek by abra for one dirham, wander the Gold Souk, and finish with mezze at Al Ustad Special Kebab in Bur Dubai. Day three belongs to the desert: book a Platinum Heritage vintage Land Rover tour into Al Marmoom for falconry, camel rides, and a low-table dinner under the stars.

Save day four for the showpieces. Sunrise at the Burj Khalifa beats the haze. Lunch at Orfali Bros, currently the best restaurant in the Middle East, requires booking weeks ahead. End at the Museum of the Future, then drinks at CÉ LA VI on the 54th floor of Address Sky View.

Visit between November and March; summer is genuinely brutal. Careem and Uber are cheaper than taxis. Dress code is relaxed at hotels but modest in souks and mosques. Tipping 10 to 15 percent is standard at restaurants.
